Just Walk With Me
Two Las Vegas artists are currently showing at the Valley
of Fire Visitor's Center through February 2008. Enjoy
the beautiful watercolors of Mary Shaw, a long time Las
Vegas resident and member of the Watercolor Society, and
the woodcuts of Maria Arango

Raku
Pottery Firing
March 29 glazing 9am -?
March 30 firing begins at 9am-?
Boulder
City Art Center
In ABC Park
801 Adams Boulevard
Raku
Pottery Firing involves heating glazed pots to 1800
degrees F in a specialized Raku kiln. Pots are removed
and placed in a container of combustible material. The
cooling process used in Raku fractures the glaze, creating
what is known as "crazing." Once pots are
cooled, they are removed and doused with water and scrubbed
clean.
All are welcome to glaze a one of a kind creation. Clay
pieces created at the Art Center start at $5 and include
the use of glazes and firing. You don't need to be present
to have your piece fired. Completed pieces can be picked
up at the Art Center on any scheduled lab day.

"Manhole
Cover Monoprints"
Artist Reception And Lecture Set For April 13
Lecture Is In Conjunction With Art Exhibit
The
public is invited to attend a reception and listen to
a free lecture by artist Ralph Brancaccio on Friday,
April 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Reed Whipple
Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The lecture is in
conjunction with "Manhole Cover Monoprints"
on exhibit in the cultural center's gallery. Brancaccio
uses manhole covers as a printing plate to create colorful
imagery that often goes beyond the representation of
the manhole cover. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m.,
with the lecture beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The
exhibition consists of various sized manhole monoprints
from many places around the world, such as Budapest,
Hungary, Paris, New York, Chicago, Taiwan, London, Barcelona,
Spain and Hamburg, Germany. Exact locations of the covers
are included on each print, which records the artist's
life journey.
Brancaccio
uses the manhole cover directly in the street, becoming
part of the daily street activity. This places the process
of his art making in the category of a performance or
demonstration. This spot also becomes his temporary
studio. "The idea is crazy
(but) it causes
people to look at their surroundings in a certain way,"
Brancaccio said.
"Manhole
Cover Monoprints" runs from April 13 through June
21. The exhibit is presented by the Office of Cultural
Affairs of the city of Las Vegas Office of Government
and Community Affairs. The cultural center is open Tuesday
through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and
Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center will be closed
on June 17 due to summer camp hours. Call (702) 229-1012
for more information.
