George
Markiewicz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While
he was a student in high school, he took correspondence
courses in art. Then came four years in the Air Force,
where he was stationed at Eglin AFB, working as a
crew chief on jets. During that time, he painted on
his won. After leaving the service, he worked for
General Motors in Milwaukee. There he worked on the
US Space and Missle projects. He retired as the tool
room supervisor at General Motors. During the years
in Milwaukee, he attended LaFarge Institute in Milwaukee
and studied art. He also studied watercolor at the
Elder Hostel courses in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
After
moving to Henderson in 1997, he attended art courses
for two years at the Community College of Southern
Nevada. He has also taken instruction from Lois Payne
and Joyce Peterson, artist in this area. He also taught
watercolor to Seniors at the Senior Center in Henderson
using videos as instruction tools.
He
regards art as a continuing learning experience and
way of viewing the world in all its facets. He prefers
realism in painting. While he prefers oil he has also
painted in acrylic and watercolor, and has done pencil
portraits of family members and celebrities. He has
also done retouching of old photos, some of which
came out of the Second World War.
He enjoys the company of other artists as well as
those who enjoy art. He finds them to be a special
type of people. He has been a member of the Washington
Island Art Association in Wisconsin for several years.
He currently has art work at City Lights Art Gallery
in Henderson where he is a member.
