Bio:
R. Cranley is a retired Pathologist who had been casually
involved
with wood turning for many years. After attending
a national conference
of woodturners a few years ago, and having seen the
remarkable works
created by world class turners, he became deeply involved
in the more
creative aspect of the art. Cranley has studied the
advanced aspects of
this craft under several internationally recognized
turners such as
David Ellsworth, John Jordan and Alan Stirt. His studio
is located in
Las Vegas.
Artist's
statement: Creating works of art from wood is both
challenging
and immensely satisfying. The challenge arises from
trying to "read"
the unturned timber so that the most appropriate form
may be created
from it. The satisfaction stems from the realization
that you have at
least partially succeeded in doing so and the final
result does some
justice to the original timber. But the completion
of a single piece
does not end the search for greater perfection. To
paraphrase Picasso,
"One doesn't make a work of art. One makes studies,
One never ends
getting near."
